Population : India, the largest Democracy in the world., with a population of 1,027,995,904 people, is the second largest populous country in the world. It is told that if the population explodes as it happens now, India would be the largest populated country in the face of the earth. Geographically India is 3,024,000 sq. kms. with 28 states and 7 union territories. Nearly 18.5% of the world population is in India, living on 2.4% of the world's surface. Over a 600 million in India live in deep poverty and over 300 million below the poverty line.
Language : India is very diverse in its language. It has more than 1,640 languages and dialects. The Government of India has accepted 18 languages as official. English enjoys associate status and is the most important language for national politics and commercial communication.
Literacy : Officially, it is 52% but functionally below 20%.
Religion : India is called as the mother land of religions, and has given birth to the major religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. India also has a lot of cultic and occultic religious practices along with more than 335,000 million gods and goddesses. In population, Hindu 80.5%, Muslim 13.4%, Christian 2.3% Sikh 1.9%, other 1.8%, unspecified 0.1%. Muslim is a minority in India with a total population of 110,000,000. That means India has the highest number of Muslims than any other country in the World.
Demography : There are 6,400 castes and tribes in India and most of them belong to the backward category. 70% of the Indian population lives in more than 700,000 village communities. Only about 65,000 villages would have a Christian or a Christian congregation.
No other country or region in the world has such a diversity and concentration of unreached people. Can we close our eyes when we see such a great need?
